Saint of the Day: St Mary of the Rosary

In 1571 the Christian fleet defeated the Ottoman one in Lepanto, marking the end of the Ottoman presence at sea. The Christian coalition, led by Johannes of Austria, received the banner of the fleet in the Santa Chiara Monastery in Napoli (worth a visit), then sailed to the battle zone where, supported by the prayers of Pope Pius V, the Holy League prevailed.

It was October 7th 1571, the Pope was praying the rosary, the Roman Church dedicated the day to Saint Mary of the Rosary. The winners of the battle were (portrait) John of Austria, Marcantonio Colonna and Sebastiano Venier
