A leading democracy respects due balances, guaranteed by the separation of powers. The American constitution is permeated by the ideas of the Enlightenment period, as appropriately described by Alexis de Tocqueville.

The american people is sometimes exibiting examples of elegant separation of duties even at the family level, as the news reported at the New York Times link shows: the role of the daughter will never be mixed with the one of the father, the son in law acts as an additional guarantee in front of the subjects.
